Photograph article dated March 16, 1959 reads, "Barbara Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Smith, 13071 Reliance St., Pacoima, will become the first girl in the 10-year history of Valley Beth Israel Temple, 11050 Lorne St., Sun Valley, to celebrate her Bat Mitzvah confirmation at religious services on March 20 and 21. A student at Pacoima Junior High School, Barbara will chant a portion of the Sabbath service and a portion from the prophetic section of the Bible, followed by a pledge of faith. She will receive the benediction from Rabbi A. Yisrael Klein and Cantor Eugene Hofstadter."
