Title supplied by cataloger. Built in 1922, the Sovereign was an "own-your-own", eleven-story, apartment building and contained ninety-five units. It was a luxurious complex with many amenities catering to the needs of residents. It is Long Beach Historic Landmark no. 16.52.420. The Carnegie Library, designed by F. P. Burnham in the Classical Revival style, was constructed in 1908. The building served as the city's public library from 1909 until 1972, when a fire forced its closure. It was demolished a year later. An aerial view of the Sovereign Apartments, center left, at 360 West Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach. Next to it is the Blackstone Apartment building. The Speedene Gasoline station is behind the Blackstone and the Pekin Cafe is on its right at the other end of an empty lot. Behind the Pekin Cafe is Lincoln Park, the site of the original plaza in Long Beach with the Carnegie Library in the center.
