One of the vāhalkadas built at the four cardinal points. The lowest and uppermost extant friezes have sculptured heads of elephants and makara, respectively, alternating with discs (peterae) with the lotus motif. An altar was placed centrally in front of it for offerings donated in veneration of the relics enshrined inside the stupa. An imposing superstructure, now missing, would have been built above this structure at the ground level.
