Photograph article dated July 20, 1965 partially reads, "Why do women become licensed airplane pilots? Members of the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the 99's Inc., an international organization of licensed women pilots, got their licenses for reasons ranging from love to air sickness... The 99's is an active group. They go on monthly fly-ins anywhere from 15 to 150 miles just for lunch and relaxation. Recent fly-ins have been to Catalina, Los Alamitos Naval Air Station, San Diego, Palm Springs, Apple Valley, Ventura, Palomar and California City... They also had seven members entered in this year's Powder Puff Derby for women pilots. The derby was a race from El Cajon, Calif., to Chattanooga, Tenn." Photograph caption reads, "Watching plane land at Van Nuys Skyways are Mrs. Bette Malone, Burbank, left, and Miss Catherine Black, Northridge, members of San Fernando Valley Chapter of 99's Inc., an international organization for licensed women pilots."; See images #00135217 through #00135221 for all photos in this series.
