They began operations as the Barron-Gray Packing Company, with Barron as President. Earnest Barron, born in England in 1882, had been sales manager of the J. C. Ainsley Packing Company. He brought to the new venture many important contacts in the industry. Mr. Barron passed away in May of 1924, at the age of 42 Herbert E. Gray first came to San Jose in 1915. After the death of his partner, he carried on business of the Barron-Gray Packing Company. Under his leadership, the canning season was stretched to almost year-round operation by canning many different products. Mr. Gray originated the production of fruit cocktail in 1926. He sold 75 cases that year to S&W Fine Foods. By 1948 Barron-Gray needed 200,000 cases of pineapple for its fruit cocktail production. This led to a merger with Hawaiian Pineapple Company and Vice-President in charge of the San Jose operations. He retired in 1952.
