f. 1. [Joannes Oliva]. [Portolan atlas]. Latin. Nautical chart of Mediterranean Sea and Europe, including the British Isles and Scandinavia. Title from printed catalog. Support: Parchment. Other Decoration: Black and red ink for nomenclature in a minuscule script with area names in display script; land masses outlined in color, islands painted silver, red, or green; 9 compass roses (many elaborately drawn); usual 32 rhumb line network in black, red, and green ink for the principal directions; latitude scale numbered from 18° to 66° forming left border of chart (with Azores outside), no longitude; 2 unnumbered scales of distance framed in scroll designs; highly decorated with figures of sovereigns, coats of arms, vignettes of cities with banners, animals, trees, ships, and a crucifixion scene which fills the triangular projection at the left.
