Exterior view of the Pioneer House of the Mother Colony of Anaheim, in which Madame Modjeska lived when she arrived from Poland. This colony was composed of fifty American citizens who came from San Francisco and founded it for the purpose of grape growing. It was a religious group. Several sites were considered but the Anaheim one was decided on. In 1858 the stockholders met in San Francisco to decide on a name; Anaheim was chosen.
