Description
This photograph captures the pyrotechnics of the Dawn of Gold and Historical Spectacle, held at Sacramento Municipal Stadium in August of 1939 to celebrate the Golden Empire Centennial. The event lasted three days and provided music and re-enactments of seminal moments in the development of Sacramento and the state of California. The arrival of Capt. John Sutter at the mouth of the American River, the Bear Flag Rebellion, the demise of the Donner Party, the discovery of gold, and the Gay Nineties were some of the more notable events included. The venue's name would later be changed to Hughes Stadium.
