TX941.M68 PHOTO ALBUM: **TX941.M68 C55 Page 1 text: Mount Wilson, California / Collection of more than 100 photopostcards from this famous site above Pasadena, California. / Includes historic shots of the way stations, the hotel and surrounding grounds, and the Mt. Wilson trail. / Mt. Wilson was named after B.D. Wilson who built the trail in 1864. The Harvard Telescope was taken to the summit in 1889[.] About 1900, a hotel and tourist camp was built, which is the subject of these cards. / Provenance: Angie Childs, onetime owner of Mt. Wilson. Mount Wilson, named for B.D. (Benjamin D. "Don Benito") Wilson, lies above Pasadena. In 1889, a 13-inch Harvard Telescope was assembled on the peak. In 1904, Carnegie Institute of Washington was granted a 99-year lease for 40 acres on Mount Wilson for telescopes, the Pasadena and Mount Wilson Toll Road Company built the Mount Wilson Hotel to promote tourists, George Ellery Hale relocated the Snow Solar Telescope to Mount Wilson from Yerkes Observatory. In 1908, the 60-inch reflector Hale Telescope was completed. In 1913, Mount Wilson Hotel burns down and is rebuilt. In 1917, the 100-inch reflector Hooker Telescope was completed. Fifteen representative views of Mount Wilson activities in photopostcard album containing 112 photopostcards. Shows Mt. Wilson Hotel in the early 1900's, the observatory, the telescope, surrounding landscape at different seasons, Mt. Wilson road, guest cottages, guest activities; day and night aerial views of Pasadena and Los Angeles as seen from summit. Some postcards include postmark dates, ranging from 1905 to 1921.
