Burial of Union soldiers at Fredericksburg, Va. Photograph shows covered bodies laying besides wooden coffins and a group of soldiers standing or sitting nearby. Title from caption. Alt title from recto. Caption on stereograph's verso indicates that image was taken on Dec. 15, 1862, but the summary from the Library of Congress puts the photo's battle and date at Grant's Wilderness Campaign, May-June 1864. Written on verso: After the battle the dead are gathered and buried. Sometimes pine boxes were procured and single graves were made, with a head-board giving the name, company, and regiment, if it could be ascertained. This view was at Fredericksburg, Va., Dec. 15, 1862, and shows burial detail employed in burying the Union dead. This burial detail is under a flag of truce, as the Rebels hold this field.
