On June 24, 1886 the departure from Los Angeles of the first special fast fruit train was a gala occasion. They decorated the locomotive with flags, and enthusiastic shippers and growers climbed to the top of the cars for the photograph. Southern California fruit output in 1886 was 1969 cars. The Southern Pacific train was chartered by W. R. Strong & Co. and Edwin T. Earl, fruit packers and shippers, Sacramento.
