Description
Photograph of "Wedding of the rails", a re-enactment of the ceremony celebrating the connection of Los Angeles and San Francisco by the Southern Pacific Railroad, showing men shaking hands over the railroad tracks, 1926. A crowd of men in suits stands on the left and another crowd on the right. Trains stand on the tracks behind them on either side. A short, elderly man in a suit stands at center between the two crowds and hammers a railroad spike into the tracks. Two sets of men, one in front of the short man and one behind him, shake hands over the site. Several women in fine dresses look on from the train on the right.
