V1p230a In PHOTO ALBUM-VAULT: ** fc917.9461 A3, Vol. I, page 230. This photograph is contained in one of two volumes by Dobbin titled "Album of San Francisco." Credit written on photo: "Copyrighted 1911 G.W. Blum photo." Caption written under photo: "Madan Nordeka [sic] singing the Star Spangled Banner Stadium Golden Gate Park 1911." Photo shows opera singer Lillian Nordica singing midway up the stadium embankment, with a crowd seated behind her. Above is a sign reading: "California welcomes the world. Panama Pacific International Exposition. San Francisco 1915." According to Frank Morton Todd in "The Story of the Exposition, the date of this ceremony was October 24, 1911. Text written under photo: "President Taft and staff occupying box. This is the occasion of the turning of the first shovel full of earth on the ground to be occupied as site for the Worlds Exhibition. Mysterious influnces [sic] altered plans and the fair was held in another location."
