Text written under photo: "Looking west on California St. from Sansome Street 1914." Photo was actually taken from about Leidesdorff Street looking at the corner of California and Montgomery. The Parrott Block and the Alvinza Hayward Building can be seen at the right corner. The spire of Old St. Mary's is visible further up California on the right. The tracks of the California Street Cable Railway Company are also visible, along with one of its cars further up Nob Hill. Close to the camera and up the hill, crowds have gathered and appear to be looking at something in the intersection, which is not visible in the photo.
