Description
The site of the "Old Post Office," was occupied by three houses prior to its acquisitrion by the federal government. The first house was moved to a new site at 34 Mountain View Avenue in Novel of 1940, 2 doors eastr of the rear of Scout Hall. The house belonged to William Reimann, Mill Valley manager of New Method Laundry owened by P.J. Elliott. The house was sold for $5000. The contractor resold it to Dr. C.T. Shotkin. The second house belonged to Mr. Reiman's son and was moved a week later to 11 Grove Street. Mr. Reiman was paid $6500 for it. It was resold to Isa Wilson who lived with her brother. The third house, at 53 Sunnyside, belonged to one of the Costa brothers. It was sold for $4500. As there was no buyer the house was demolished by the contractor, the Capital Co., a subsidiary of the Bank of America. The Post Office Buildings was built by Schuler and McDonald of Oakland for $52,000. By the 1970's the substantial Spanish modern building proved inadequate to accommodate the postal needs of the community. At first, the old Ford garage on east Blithedale was used as an annex and later the larger, former Dodge garage on Corete Madera was leased. By 1982 a new Federal building was completed on Lomita and the post office building was administered as a community center by an enterprising group of local citizens. A small portion was retained for limited postal services.
