Photograph of an exterior view of the Saint Elmo Hotel on Main Street, Los Angeles, ca.1890. The three-story Romanesque hotel stands eleven windows across, between two other building that are partially visible to either side. At center, over the main entrance, A balcony extends, which has been decorated in an American flag motif and on which several people stand. Below several other groups of people pose on the sidewalk among the signs affixed to the buildings. Legible signs include: "Southern California Fire Insurance Co.", "Rail Road Tickets [...] Bought Sold Exchanged / Cut Rates", "Office of the Los Angeles Steam Laundry Co. [...] Called For [...] Returned [...] Day", "Excursion", "Evan[...] & Cornwill[...] Gentleman's Neckwear", "[...] Fine Furnishings for Men", "Hosiery", "Shirts" and "Crockery and Glassware".
