Description
The Pasadena Playhouse produced over 1,600 plays between 1917 and 1969, training and featuring hundreds of leading actors of the twentieth century. At one time the largest community theater west of New York, the Playhouse pioneered a "theatre-in-the-round" staging technique and became a leader in the Little Theatre movement that began prior to World War I. During the organization's "golden years" from the 1920s through the 1940s, it staged hundreds of new plays, including American and world premieres by Eugene O'Neill, William Saroyan, Tennessee Williams, and Noel Coward, and became known internationally as the only American theater to have performed all of Shakespeare's plays.Additional Descriptive Notes: Success Story, a live weekly program sponsored by Richfield, visits the Playhouse to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Reporter Ken Peters interviews cast members before a performance of Romeo and Juliet, and students and teachers of the Playhouse College of Theater Arts. 6:25 Gail Shoup speaks about the students and learning process during a rehearsal; 10:13-11:33 Fencing and dance students; 12:14 -15:59 Gilmor Brown discusses his career and the Playhouse; 16:33-21:03 Television techniques class; 21:04-22:01 Set design and costumes; 22:02 2nd year students rehearse a student play; 23:30-24:42 Actor playing Mercutio, Gene Raymond, speaks with Ken Peters; 24:43 Actors Margaret O'Brien and Florence Reed on the main stage in a scene from Romeo and Juliet.
