Description
Beverly Hills Siddhartha, Los Angeles, 1969-1970. Climax Nightclub, 333 South La Cienega Boulevard, Los Angeles. "The Beverly Hills Siddhartha, the second painting by the Los Angeles Fine Arts Squad, was a work of technical and conceptual brilliance which actually succeeded in the visual obliteration of the Climax Club's bizarre structure. Executed in hyper-realistic billboard style, it depicted the symbolic spiritual development of a young man of wealth through the material world to a point where he sits in a wide desert finally at peace with himself. The work covered 9,000 square feet of curving wallspace [sic], and took one year (1969-1970), $15,000 and 200 gallons of paint, to complete. Long before it was finished, the mural began inviting the attention of passersby and drawing praise from the local art world." -- Environmental Communications, Street paintings of Los Angeles, unpaged, #3-15
