Description
Bill Schafer worked for the Department for nearly 38 years. His first assignment was in 1951 in District 4 where he was involved with freeway route planning. Some of his other positions include Resident Engineer, District 8; Assistant Traffic Engineer under Karl Moskowitz; Design Engineer in District 7 (1961 to 1971); Deputy Chief Engineer; and Deputy Director of Maintenance and Operation (1980 to 1982). From 1983 until his retirement in August 1990, he served as Deputy Director of Project Development and Chief Engineer of Caltrans.
