Title supplied by cataloger. Designed by Clifford Balch, this Art Deco and Streamline Moderne style theater, which has been a live music venue since 1994, is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. Photographer's caption reads, "The first Saturday night of May 2001 was Andy Warhol - Club Makeup - night at the El Rey Theater [sic] (1928). By midnight the capacity crowd of heavily made up, tattooed, bouffant hair-do's, bell-bottomed, cross-dressed, transsexual, and leather clad, shaggy, white-haired Andy Warhol look-alikes have all gone into the theater. Practically alone on Wilshire Boulevard, a couple spend an intimate moment before rejoining the retro crowd for a reputed outrageous show performed by makeup musical director Xander Smith and the Makeup house band, "The Gutter Gangster All-Stars.""
