Description
Photograph of a Southern Pacific train nearing a mining tunnel, California, ca.1870. Two men pose on the back of the engineer's cabin of a locomotive engine while a third leans out from the side window. They trail a coal car behind them whose side reads "Southern Pacific R.R.". Behind them, a rock face slopes down from the right, a tunnel cut out with a wood frame at its center, for which the train is headed. A tree is visible on top of the rock face. Wood beams line the side of the rail road tracks. Picture file card reads: "According to Bob Wolfenstein, this picture was taken in the 1870's as engines and men's dress are typical of that period. Tunnel is definitely not the San Fernando Tunnel--probably the Newhall Tunnel. 3-7-74.".
