Description
In response to the spread of organized anti-Semitism in the United States during the 1930s, leaders of Los Angeles' Jewish community formed a special defense organization known as the Los Angeles Jewish Community Committee. The committee later changed its name to the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles, Community Relations Committee. The collection documents the committee's efforts to combat prejudice and educate the public through cooperation with both Jewish and non-Jewish groups, from its formation in 1933 through the early 1990s. The "Picture Book for Big and Little", or "Ein Bilderbuch für Gross und Klein", was a Nazi-propaganda book aimed at children. Written by kindergarten teacher Elvira Bauer in 1936, it was widely distributed in German schools, and was carried locally by the Aryan Bookstore of Los Angeles. This sample from the book offers a poem and illustration. The illustration depicts what we can presume is a Jewish man, offering jewelry to an Aryan-looking girl, as neighborhood children look on. The corresponding poem begins, "What a poor wretch is the Jew! He doesn't want his own women!" 8.5 x 11 in.
