Description
The woman on the left wears a purple, off-the-shoulder dress with a fitted bodice and full skirts. The neckline is edged with a wide band of white lace, and the sleeves are short, puffing twice above the elbow and ending in a cascade of white lace set off with a white braid bow. The woman wears a long purple cord belt with tasseled ends, and short white gloves with ruffles at the wrists. Her shoes are white and she wears a pleated white headdress trimmed with yellow ribbon. In her left hand she holds a small nosegay (often called a tussie-mussie at this time period) with a pink rose in the center. The woman on the right wears a grey wrap dress with a grey sash tied in a bow at the waist. The vee-neck and wrap edge of the dress are trimmed with three rows of black net ruffles. The same ruffles adorn the upper portions of the sleeves, which are full from the upper arms to the white, lace-edged cuffs. The woman wears pointed black shoes, white gloves, and a round, white bonnet decorated with a pink-tipped, white plume and pink flowers. She holds a white book or program in her right hand. The upper half of a third woman is drawn above the other two. She wears a pale lavender dress with ruffles down the bodice and skirts and long sleeves which are ruched at the upper arm, then loose to the long tight cuffs, which are hemmed in white. The dress has a vee-shaped neck edged with a wide white lace ruffle. A brooch is pinned to the bodice, and the woman wears white gloves and a deep-brimmed white bonnet with a rear ruffle. The bonnet is trimmed with white plumes, a white bow, and a band of wide ribbon. In her right hand, the woman holds a lace-edged handkerchief. A green bonnet decorated with white lace, a white plume, and small pink flowers is in the upper left corner of the plate. Shown below it is a close-fitting lacy white cap, trimmed with white flowers and blue ribbons. In the upper right of the image is a pale brown poke bonnet with a large bunch of pink flowers at the side. Below it is a lacy cap adorned with a pale gray bow, lace streamers and a spray of pink flowers.
