Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. This recording is the Loma Prieta oral history of Betty Gividen. At the time of the Loma Prieta earthquake, Gividen was a Procurement Supervisor for Caltrans at the 150 Oak Street location in San Francisco. When the earthquake happened she was at home in Alameda. After the earthquake she describes her experiences in working with vendors to receive supplies needed for the Maintenance Department, and to the Cypress Structure to assist in the rescue efforts. When a disaster strikes most people think of the first responders, however the procurement team played a critical role in assisting in working with Caltrans vendors to receive needed supplies so that the Transportation system in the Bay Area was rebuilt.
