Description
The Burlington Zephyr on display at the Western Pacific Passenger Depot at 1910 J Street. The train visited Sacramento on June 25, 1934 as part of a promotional tour.
Powered by a 660-horsepower diesel engine, before its arrival in Sacramento it set a speed record traveling between Chicago and Denver at an average of 77 miles per hour with a top speed of 112.5 miles per hour. The Burlington Zephyr was popular enough to inspire the production of model trains in both fairly expensive and more affordable varieties and for Camel Cigarettes to invoke its name in advertisements.
As of 2020, the former Western Pacific Passenger Depot houses an Old Spaghetti Factory restaurant.
