Description
“Heathen natives and idol drum - Ambrim [Ambrym].” Group photo of indigenous men, women, and children by embellished slit drums. Each man is naked except for a ‘namba’ (a traditional penis sheath from the New Hebrides [Vanuatu]). Three women on the left wear only grass skirts. The people of the New Hebrides cut large logs with 'totem' type carvings on the outer surface and hollow out the centre leaving only a slit down the front. These hollowed out logs give the deep resonance of drums when hit on the outside with sticks.
