Description
Held at the San Jose Rodeo Grounds (Alum Rock Avenue at Capitol). The first page gives a history of the organization: "Feeling that there was a definite need for public service of the kind which only a group of horsemen could give, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's posse was formed in 1939 by a small group of horseowners. The organization had these objectives: To uphold and defend the constitution and all laws of the United States of America, the State of California and the county of Santa Clara. To foster and perpetuate a spirit of good fellowship and fraternalism among its members. To promote a feeling of good will between the county of Santa Clara and the other counties of the state, and the rekindling of that pioneer spirit of our forefathers and their love of fine horseflesh. To assist the sheriff when called upon in enforcing the law, especially in territory inaccessible to automotive transit, or in any other territory the sheriff may designate. Starting with a small group, the sheriff's posse is now limited to fifty members, who are selected for their good moral character and ability as horsemen. Each member is a qualified deputy sheriff, subject to call of the sheriff at a moment's notice. At present Al Kearney is president of the posse, with Charles Plummer as vice president, Roy Gaskin, secretary, Richard Levin, treasurer. Posse members have aided Sheriff William J. Emig in capturing a prison camp fugitive in the Mt. Hamilton region, arrested a man who set fire to his estranged wife's home and fled into mountain country, and assisted in a recent cattle roundup following eviction of an armed rancher from a home. The sheriff's posse stables its horses at 2030 Alum Rock avenue, where it has its own grounds. Horses are well groomed and their appearance reflects their excellent care."
