View of the site of San Francisco (formerly called Yerba Buena) from across the bay. At left is a trading schooner of Jacob P. Leese. The house of Leese and tent of Capt. W. A. Richardson are the only structures in San Francisco at the time. Five men are in a rowboat at left; two large sailing ships are to the right; other ships in the distance. Text below the print at left: "The above is correct view of Yerba Buena, now San Francisco, in 1837." Handwritten below: "Jacob P. Leese who built the first house." Text at right below image: "American Ship Alciope. Capt. Curtis." "Ecuador Brig. Delmira. Capt. Jno J. Vioget." "Lithographed by Geo. H. Baker, from the original drawing by John J. Vioget.
