Description
In this oral history, former Mill Valley Mayor Dean Meyer discusses his life and service to the community. Born in San Francisco in 1927, Dean grew up in Burlingame. After graduating high school, Dean enlisted in the Army and spent three years in Japan as part of the postwar American occupation. When he returned to the U.S., he attended San Mateo Community College and U.C. Berkeley. In 1958 he married his wife Shirley, and soon after they moved to Mill Valley where they raised their three children, Douglas, Daniel, and Susan. Dean began his public service on Mill Valley's Parks and Recreation Commission. He was subsequently elected to city council, finally serving a term as mayor. Dean discusses some of the projects he was involved in during his tenure, including the construction of the new library, the appointment of Lucretia Little as city historian, and the protection of the contiguous open spaces that would become the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. In the 1970s, Dean and his family relocated to Hayfork in Trinity County where he continued his public service for a time before retiring.
