Photograph caption dated February 14, 1964 reads "Coach Joe Gordon, far right, kneeling, watches his Grant High Lancers during training season Thursday as they prepare for opening practice game Feb. 23 against Cleveland. Grant is the defending champion in the East Valley League and is heavy favorite to repeat. John Eaker is seen catching batting practice with footballer Bob Long at the plate. All teams in the East and West Valley circuits have non-league games Feb. 25. Regular league play begins March 5. Birmingham High is the defending champion in the West Valley League." Grant High School is in Van Nuys.
