“Ulcer cases.” Group portrait of nurses and patients, many with bandaged legs, outside a small house. Sister Margaret Burt stands on the right and the building on the left is part of the annexe where out-patients could stay if needed. An epidemic of ulcers occurred in 1949 and the annexe accommodated the overflow from the hospital, by this time ulcers were treated with penicillin. ❧ The image is from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the period from 1928-1961 at the Chogoria mission which was established in 1922.
