Photograph caption dated May 9, 1958 reads "Explosimeter that detects gas leaks is used by Captain Ballentine in checking drilling equipment at well on Newhall Land & Farming Company's properties near Castaic Junction. With him is Steve Thomas, left, drilling superintendent for Sunray Company which has contract to drill well for Texas company. Modern drilling methods and safety requirements have cut fire hazards in California oil fields." See images 00155236 through 00155241 for all photos in this series.
