Description
This January 30, 1922, photograph shows the snow-layered grounds of Capitol Park. Not only did January 1922 prove to be Sacramento’s coldest month in 44 years, averaging 40 degrees, Fahrenheit, it was also the bringer of snow. Measurements of one-and-a-half inches were taken on the morning of the thirtieth from Plaza Park at Ninth and J Streets and the United States Post Office at Seventh and K Streets. A brief “Sacramento Union” article from the same day captured the astonishment of several tourists from Chicago, Illinois, who were greeted with snow-covered orange and palm trees.
