Description
John George, born in August 1905 in Lake City, Colorado, was a resident of Mill Valley since 1930. Virginia Glahn Cameron George, born in May 1913 in Petaluma, California, was a resident of Mill Valley since 1913. After moving west from Colorado and finishing college, John became the principal of high school with 14 students in Astoria, Oregon. He moved to California in 1929 and pursued graduate work at Stanford University. John eventually took a job teaching at Tamalpais High School, where he remained for more than 30 years. Virginia's father sold dairy products in Petaluma and moved to Mill Valley in 1913, where the family lived in a large East Blithedale house that eventually became the real estate office of George Cagwin. Virginia attended every grammar school in Mill Valley, but her family later moved to Oakland, where she graduated from the eighth grade. The family returned to Mill Valley in 1929 and she attended Tamalpais High School. In this oral history, John and Virginia discuss in detail daily life in Mill Valley, including shops and entertainment. They offer observations on the changes to Mill Valley over the course of the century.
