Photographic composite portrait of Alice Stebbins Wells and Aletha Gilbert, two of the first female police women, 1910. Wells is at left and is wearing a long dark jacket over a dark dress. She has a lace collar and a large police badge is affixed to her lapel at right. She is wearing a hat that resembles a scarf wrapped around her head with a large flower decoration at right. The badge in the photo is #398 Los Angeles Police later, this badge was replaced with Policewoman #1 after Alice was accused of using her husband's badge to ride the street car. Back of photoprint reads "One of the first policewomen, Lucy Gray 1910". Gilbert is at right and is also wearing a dark jacket and dress. She has a similar badge. She is wearing a broad-brimmed hat with a large flower at right. Her mother, Lucy Gray, was hired as Los Angeles's first female jailer in 1888. Back of photoprint reads "One of the first Police Women, Alethe Gilbert 1910".
