Description
Photograph of a heavy duty, steam-driven rotary drilling rig, ca.1930. The steel derrick (136' x 30') is capable of drilling up to fourteen thousand feet and stands above a large, wooden base at center. What appear to be barrels lie in the dirt in front of the base while automobiles stand on the right of it. Several small, wooden structures stand in front of a cylinder on the right which appears to be secreting smoke over the machines to the left of it. Another cylinder stands on the left behind another automobile while four tall pipes stand in a row next to it. A cluster of trees can be seen behind the cylinder on the left while a field of grass lies in front of a short, wire fence in the foreground.
