Presidential Candidate Ángel Aníbal Guevara speaks in front of a crowd of Mayan women, men and children at a campaign rally during election week. Behind him there are four campaign flyers with a portrait of Guevara wearing military uniform. There is also a large poster that reads, "Vote like this." Many in the crowd are wearing hats and colorful traditional Mayan clothing. On March 8, 1982 Guevara won the presidential election although electoral fraud was claimed by other parties. A military coup prevented Guevara from assuming power and installed a three-man junta headed by General Efraín Ríos Montt.
