Text printed on photo: "Clay Street Lodging-House Fire, Aug. 25, 1911." Photo shows firemen climbing ladders in to a fire-damaged structure which appears to be not a lodging house but a warehouse. Smoke is collecting further down the street; it's possible that the fire involved several buildings. Hoses are snaking around the street and up the sides of buildings. Crates are stacked on the sidewalk. The exact location on Clay Street is not clear nor is the direction the camera is facing, but the area seems to be the produce district near the Embarcadero.
