A large group of nuns in religious habit, parishioners, and Sandinista officials in military uniform cheer the arrival of Pope John Paul II to Plaza 19 de Julio during his visit to Nicaragua in March 1983. Many in the crowd are holding and waving the red-and-black flag of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) and the yellow-and-white flag of the Vatican City. Above the cheering crowd there is a large poster that includes the faces of Nicaragua's revolutionary heroes (from left to right): Santos López, Tomás Borge, Francisco Buitrago, and Silvio Mayorga.
