Description
Photograph article dated February 1, 1962 partially reads, "David Sandford Evans relaxed in his Chatsworth rental after a morning working his horses and explained why steeplechasing, popular in his native England, is not popular in America. Simply: 'Steeplechase betting in America is illegal.' In England, said Evans, 'people put up a couple of shillings just to have a jolly good time watching a race.' But in America, 'half the people at the track wouldn't have the slightest idea horses are running if they didn't have a bet on them.'" Photograph caption reads, "Evans demonstrates a steeplechase jump. 'Originally it was a race between communities.'"; See images #00130689 through #00130691 for all photos in this series.
