Description
From a collection of Photographs of various grand officers Photograph 4a: photographic print on paper Photograph 4b: sepia tone duplicate of 4a Motley Flint Banker East Gate No. 290, Los Angeles Elected Grand Master in October 1905 Was heavily involved in the 1906 SF earthquake and fire relief B: 2/19/1865 D: 7/14/1930 (Assassinated) While Flint is best known for his benevolent actions during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, as well as his work with the nascent movie studio system, his career did include rather serious scandals-one of which led to his death. In 1914, he was also involved in the so-called "Masonic Whitewash Committee" of 1914 -an independent committee that investigated the bogus oath of the Knights of Columbus. This committee, comprised of Flint, Samuel Burke, William R. Hervey, and Dana Reid Weller, caused an uproar during a period that was defined by a rising anti-Catholic sentiment and fervent Protestant evangelism that, in 1915, would give rise to a new Ku Klux Klan. An essay, by Adam Kendall, chronicling the Whitewash Committee debuted at the 2011 International Conference on Masonic History and will appear in a forthcoming issue of the European Journal of American Culture.
