This Chevrolet assembly plant opened in 1947 and produced the Chevrolet Corvair, Chevrolet Nova, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet full-size models and the Pontiac Firebird. The plant was closed in 1992 after the production of Camaro and Firebird vehicles was moved to Sainte-The´re`se Assembly in Quebec. In 1998, the facility was razed and replaced with a large retail and industrial complex, known as The Plant. GM continues to operate a car-testing facility nearby. Photograph caption dated October 22, 1959 reads, "Employes [sic] of Chevrolet line up last of automobiles to roll off assembly line at General Motors Van Nuys plant, as operations at Chevrolet and Fisher Body plants are readied for shut-down today because of steel shortages. Shut-down will affect 3,460 employes [sic] of two plants where passenger cars are assembled."
