Description
Portrait of a large, light blue-colored clock tower in Ciudad Vieja. The clock strikes a time just before 10:45am. There is a large sign on the clock tower that reads, "Ciudad Vieja Municipal Building, Department of Sacatepéquez. Standing on the clock tower there are two armed men. They are both wearing hats and holding M1 carbines of U.S. origin. Presidential Candidate Ángel Aníbal Guevara and his running mate Ramiro Ponce Monroy stand at the bottom of the bell tower of the municipal building during a campaign rally. They are both surrounded by people. Behind the two candidates there are four campaign flyers each with a portrait of Guevara wearing a military uniform. There is also a large poster that reads, "Vote like this." On March 8, 1982 Guevara won the presidential election although electoral fraud was claimed by other parties. A military coup prevented Guevara from assuming power and installed a three-man junta headed by General Efraín Ríos Montt.
