"Slave Dhow, Laws of Livingstonia" Photograph of a slave dhow, a traditional sailing vessel with a lateen sail. The ship is pictured on the water and people can be seen on board. A green flag is flying to the front of the vessel. This belongs to a series of Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee lantern slides relating to Dr Robert Laws (1851-1934) the Scottish Missionary. In 1875, inspired by David Livingstone (1813-1873), Laws travelled to Malawi and was involved in the foundation of the mission station of Livingstonia on the shores of Lake Nyasa. During the succeeding 50 years he also established a network of hundreds of schools. In 1908 Laws was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland.
