Description
Photograph of a birdseye view of the Southern Pacific Long Wharf in Santa Monica, September, 1916. This picture shows railroad tracks running along the shore towards the wharf, which extends out into the ocean for the entire length of the picture. There is a structure at the end of the pier, and on the right side of the picture, there are large mountains. The wharf, called Port Los Angeles, was the longest ocean wharf in the world at 4700 feet. It was completed in 1894 by the Southern Pacific Railroad, and it was destroyed in 1920 by the Pacific Electric Railroad Co.
