Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989
In the days before the "Fosbury Flop" revolutionized high jumping, Compton College's Charlie Dumas was the first to clear the 7-foot barrier, with a leap of 7-foot-1/2 at the Coliseum. Later that year, at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, Dumas won the gold medal. He finished his collegiate career at USC, helping the Trojans to the 1958 NCAA title. He died in 2004. Photo dated: November 23, 1956.
