Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Nathan Krems, age 3, with feathers in his cap, inspired by Native American clothing. In 1918, Indians were a reality on Seattle's streets and the city, named after an Indian chief, was close to its roots. Nathan's parents, immigrants from Poland and Russia, settled in Seattle where his father published the city's first Jewish newspaper. Nathan moved to Los Angeles in 1945.
