Kathleen Cross discusses her book, “Schooling Carmen.” She begins by describing the main character of her novel, Carmen. She explains that Carmen is impatient, short-tempered and knows she is beautiful and uses it to her advantage whenever she can. She also discusses Carmen’s relationship with her mother Mavis and how all of Carmen’s self worth is wrapped up in her mother’s opinion of her. Cross then discusses education and the importance of Algebra as a gateway subject to college. She relates her own experiences having to fight so that her daughter could have access to higher-level math. Later in the interview Cross discusses how skin color gradation is such a heated topic in American society. She explains that many people do not know the history of skin color prejudice among the black community and how it has its roots in slavery.
