Photograph caption dated July 18, 1963 reads, "The first atomic power reactor in the Los Angeles area is operated by Mayor Samuel W. Yorty during a visit to the Atomics International field laboratories in the mountains above Canoga Park while company officials watch. Called the sodium reactor experiment, the sodium-cooled nuclear plant first generated electricity in 1957. It was built for the Atomic Energy Commission by Atomics International, a division of North American Aviation."
