Description
In response to the spread of organized anti-Semitism in the United States during the 1930s, leaders of Los Angeles' Jewish community formed a special defense organization known as the Los Angeles Jewish Community Committee. The committee later changed its name to the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles, Community Relations Committee. The collection documents the committee's efforts to combat prejudice and educate the public through cooperation with both Jewish and non-Jewish groups, from its formation in 1933 through the early 1990s. What Is Wrong With The Movies? is the question posed by the title of this booklet, written in 1938 by Dr. John R. Rice. Rice was a fundamentalist Baptist evangelist and founder of a bi-weekly Christian publication called "The Sword of the Lord". This booklet elaborated on Rice's contention that "thousands of girls and boys are led into crime and adultery by the picture shows". Cover illustrations depict various decadent activities one might expect to see in movies of the late 1930s, including gangsters, smoking guns, scantily-clad showgirls, and a couple in a lustful embrace. 8 x 5.5 in.
